This morning i was talking oatmeal with my friend Kristin. She is all about adding oatmeal into her breakfast menu now that I have told her how good it is for you. (It’s a super food!)
But she wanted me to tell everyone this one tip:
If you want your oatmeal to be sort of creamy (or look like the way mine does in most of my photos) do NOT follow the directions on most boxes. A lot of canisters of oats tell you to bring the ‘water’ to a boil and then add the oats.
No.
If you like creamy oatmeal, add the oats, water and milk (if you want – cow’s milk or soy milk both are wonderful additions to oatmeal!) at the same time. Stir as you heat it up, and after several minutes it will start to boil. From the start I always add vanilla, cinnamon, sometimes nutmeg (if I can find it) along with raisins and bananas a lot of the time. But plain oatmeal is just great, too. The key is to add oatmeal at the beginning.
You’ll get a winning, healthy bowl of oatmeal.
Here is the mix I use most of the time:
1/3 cup oats
1/3 cup water
1/3 cup milk
splash vanilla
three sprinkles of cinnamon
Stir until it bubbles! Enjoy!
(sprinkle with a tad of brown sugar or add a spoonful of peanut butter if you like!)
Yum!
