The rest of the week…

Happy Sunday, bloggies! Where did the weekend go? Of course we have a whole day left – but personally, I can’t believe it’s Sunday morning already. I’m enjoying my Sunday AM tradition – coffee and the morning news shows 🙂

This week was sort of a week of vacation detox. But the funny thing is that I really didn’t need much of a detox from my vacation – it was pretty healthy! I love Vermont so much. Woodstock, Vermont is beautiful and if you are ever in the area, I highly recommend staying at the Woodstock Inn. I loved every moment there!

I was pretty much on the healthy band wagon this week – except for the cake break on Thursday and another one on Friday afternoon. The cake was so good I just couldn’t resist!

Friday morning’s breakfast was another smoothie:

In this smoothie: spinach, banana, strawberry with plain yogurt, protein powder, chia seeds and flax. I also added water and ice. It was really good. I love having these smoothies in the morning with the spinach because I’m already ahead of the game in getting my vegetable and fruit servings in for the day!

The only hitch with the smoothies is that I drink my breakfast really early in the morning… so I usually need a mid morning snack. Friday I had a great one:

This week I had salads for lunch every day. Friday’s salad looked like this:

In the salad: Spinach, tomato, red pepper, cucumbers and grilled chicken. I forgot my salad dressing on Friday, so I snagged about a teaspoon of olive oil from the caf and a little red wine vinegar. It worked well enough 🙂 I also went for a walk at lunch and covered about 1.75 miles – not bad for a quick walk!

I had an afternoon snack of pretzel thins and hummus. I was supposed to eat a pear – but I had a lot of fresh vegetables already, and my stomach was craving some carbs! After work on Friday I had a bit of a long drive home – but that is what happens when you’re leaving Boston at 5 o’clock on a Friday. I have to let you in on a little secret regarding horrible commutes to and from work. I have started listening to books on “tape” through my iPod / iPhone. It is making such a huge difference!! Now when I’m sitting in traffic I don’t feel like I’m wasting my life away. Right now I’m listening to Robert Caro’s Master of the Senate and I have been re-learning so much history on the United States Senate. I almost like being in the car so that I can turn the book on. I am using Audible.com and it really is great. Check it out if you have a long commute in the car.

I am also really digging the Summer Run Streak. It is really helping me get out there and run every day. Friday was the first test – I easily could have just called it a day when I got home at 6:45. I was tired from waking up at 5:30 every morning. But instead I did not even think about it. I brought my work bag into the house and immediately changed into my running clothes. I got out and ran 1.5 miles. It wasn’t a huge run – but it was better than sitting on my butt and not exercising at all. Something is always better than nothing. A lot of the time the run streak will get me out there and I’ll do a lot more than just a mile – Wednesday I ran a good amount. But on a day like Friday, when I normally would not have run at all, I’m really glad that the streak got me to do 1 1/2 miles instead.

Dinner was a big spinach salad with tomato and carrots and three pieces of my favorite flatbread “pizza” – American Flatbread, from Vermont! Yum. It was quite good and a really easy dinner for a Friday night.

Saturday I sprinted 1.1 miles on the treadmill at the gym because it was pouring rain. After that I did the elliptical machine for 33 minutes while watching a movie on Netflix via my iPhone (a great way to pass the time!). Then I did some strength training for my quads and hips in hopes that I won’t have any more knee or hip injuries. Woot!

After the gym I made another smoothie:

This smoothie was fantastic. It was a combo of spinach, blueberries, half a banana, a couple of spoonfuls of plain yogurt, light soy milk, ice and protein powder. Yum.

Ok. I’m signing off for now. I’m off to refill my coffee and figure out what’s going on for breakfast this morning. Enjoy your day!
